Interview With Alex Dolphin

What’s the story behind your artist name — and does it reflect who you are today?

It's just my name, lucky to have a built in stage name, however maybe Shark would have been cooler?

You tell me.

Which song of yours means the most to you, and what inspired it?

I Want You is about travelling the world to be with someone and craving them endlessly, even though you know there's a good chance things might not work out.

How would you describe your sound in three words — and why those?

Dynamic, soulful, exciting

Our sound (especially live, but working on it for recording) contains a lot of dynamics where we try to bring in and take out energy at the right moments in order to get as much emotion as possible during the right part. It's soulful as I try to sing about topics that hit people in the heart, and it's exciting, because that's what it is to me, when I get to play live I feel a rush of excitement, regardless of if it's a slow or fast song

What was the moment you truly felt like an artist — not just someone making music?

When people from other countries began reaching out to me saying how my music has touched them in a certain way, that's always a spectacular feeling.

Who are your biggest musical influences, and how do they show up in your work?

I have a ton of influences, this question is difficult to answer! For now I would say Coldplay, or Fleetwood Mac. Both have such great song writing, diverse sound choices in their music and many hits.

What’s your creative process like — from a blank page to a finished track?

Either myself or my band will come to the table with music, then we will hash out structure to bring about a digestible feel, then throughout I'll be singing something catchy, from there I'll take what we have and freestyle lyrics or pull up lyrics from the past to try and meld something fantastic into the music. Perform it a few times then get to business in the studio! Sometimes I start with lyrics and work out a song but more often it begins with music first

If someone’s hearing you for the first time, which track should they start with — and why?

Depends on their mood at the time, but I would say I Want You, since that has the best array of emotion that I have to offer with my band. It Was A Dream or Brand New Thing are poppy/rocky, where Could We Last That Long or Night or Day are more Fock songs stylistically.

What’s been your most unforgettable moment on your music journey so far?

Opening the night up at our hometowns biggest venue, there must of been 1000 people looking up at us groove out, and it was fantastic!

What do you want people to feel when they hear your music?

Connection. If a person can connect with any one of my songs at a moment in their life then its a worthwhile job. Music is the great balance maker in life, to be able to sing about something personal (or not!) and then to have that sound resonate with someone ill never meet is a spectacular feeling

What’s next for you — and what should fans be excited about?

Dialing back playing live in 25' (sorry, it takes soo much time to be a great live band, not to mention the drive time), and pushing it in the studio, we have 20 songs at various stages of development and hope to release them throughout 2025 into 2026. Much more on the way!
