Interview With Aly Berry

What’s the story behind your artist name — and does it reflect who you are today?

My Artist name is just a shortened version of my name, so technically this Is just my real name. It works as its easy to remember.

Which song of yours means the most to you, and what inspired it?

My recent release 'the wrong man' means a lot to me, I can't talk about the other songs yet as they're not out... but this one definitely means a lot. I actually wrote the idea of this song when I was around 19, then myself and Paul Higgs revisited the idea and made a whole new song and vision together. Its amazing also as I got some real top musicians on this, such as Scott Hamilton on the tenor saxophone- he's worked with some of the biggest names in Jazz, so I'm just honoured.

How would you describe your sound in three words — and why those?

Sultry, Smoky and unique. These are the words people use to describe me a lot and I think it fits the bill.

What was the moment you truly felt like an artist — not just someone making music?

I always feel my happiest when I'm on stage performing my own songs with my band, people listen to music you've created, sing along, film, applaud... and no matter how many times I do it, for me its always a pinch me moment. Thats how feeling like an artist is to me.

Who are your biggest musical influences, and how do they show up in your work?

I have many of those... always Amy Winehouse- she has always been a big inspiration, the raw lyrics, storytelling, visions and always authentic.
I'm quite an old soul with my listening taste also, I love especially love Eartha Kitt, Ruth Brown and Peggy Lee. All 3 of who are strong, again authentic, inspirations to me. Each of them are unforgettable.

What’s your creative process like — from a blank page to a finished track?

I write quite fast, I am a huge overthinker too so I am always writing. I usually start by either myself or Paul playing and singing over the piano and writing the melody and then we go from there and see where it goes.

If someone’s hearing you for the first time, which track should they start with — and why?

Currently my only track (haha) 'the wrong man'... I think its a taste of what is to come for sure.

What’s been your most unforgettable moment on your music journey so far? Meeting Paul (Higgs) for sure. I saw him play in Mayfair and thought he was very cool.. don't tell him I said that. I remember approaching him, we got talking, I sent him a demo and soon after we began writing together... it was supposed to be one song and it ended up being over 10.

What do you want people to feel when they hear your music?

I want people to feel transported, heard and I want them to feel sexy and strong.

What’s next for you — and what should fans be excited about?

releasing the next track....
